Soymilk...It's Elementary
July 2004

If you’re a parent, you’ve inevitably gone to pour milk over the Frosted Flakes only to find it soured. It may sound silly, but one of best things about soymilk is that it never spoils. Well almost never; its shelf life compared to regular milk is almost infinite. Plus it has a sweet malty flavor kids equate with a milkshake. With school just around the corner, now is a good time to think about kids and lunches....and soy.

As of this May, legislation passed that will make it easier for children who do not drink milk to have soymilk as part of their school lunch. According to the USDA, 22% of all secondary and elementary students don’t drink milk. As a result, they’re losing out on valuable nutrients that are key in childhood: calcium, vitamins A and D, and high quality protein. With the addition of soymilk, kids will gain back these nutrients along with the health promoting isoflavones that are found to decrease the risk of many diseases later in life. In addition to soymilk, which kids tend to love, here are some other ways to add soy to your children’s diets.

Five Ways Kids Love Soy

Whip up your mashed potatoes with soymilk. It imparts a nutty flavor to this all-time kid favorite.  Make sure it’s the plain, unsweetened version.

Whirl up an after school smoothie with berries, bananas and vanilla flavored soymilk.

Cut up cubes of extra-firm water packed tofu, place in a zip top plastic bag, add soy sauce a little sugar, a splash of sesame oil and store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Kids love to pop them in their mouths.

Sprinkle soy nuts on cereal, yogurt or ice cream. Use in place of nuts in your favorite cookie recipe.

Toss edamame with a little butter and salt, and serve. Most kids love beans, and to kids they’re just another bean.
